Camping is a fun summer activity for the whole family. Breathing in the fresh air is nice, but you need to remember to you are in the wild animals’ habitat. You may be worried about how to keep your campsite safe. There is nothing worse than waking up to a trashed campsite and having to leave your camping trip early. Enjoy a worry-free trip with these ways you can keep your campsite safe and secure.
Animals to Look Out for
• Bears
• Foxes
• Mountain lions
• Opossums
• Raccoons
• Wolves
• Coyotes
Secure Your Food
The first step to protecting your campsite is to keep your food secure. Stick to low-odor foods, and if you can skip the meat altogether. The smell of meat is very attractive to predatory animals, and they are highly likely to visit your campsite if the scent lingers.
It is the animal’s instinct to go to where they smell food. So, it’s best to do all your cooking and eating in a different area. Ideally, you want to keep your food 200-300ft away from your campsite. Don’t eat where you sleep and don’t keep any food in your tents—that includes pet food and treats!
Have separate clothes that you wear for cooking because they will smell like food and don’t bring them back to your campsite or anywhere besides the cooking site. Keep the cooking clothes in an odor-proof bag when you’re not using them.
You can also use odor-proof bags to store your food. Pick up your trash and double bag if you don’t use odor-proof bags. Keep all food and trash in a separate place from your sleeping grounds. Bears can break into cars and coolers, so it’s best to not keep any food in there.
Bears are pretty smart and can open containers, so you should bring bearproof containers for food if you’re going to be camping in an area with bears. When using a bearproof bag, make sure to follow the directions so it’s not in a place bears can reach.
Use Nite Guard Solar
You can take precautions to protect your food, but it’s not guaranteed that animals won’t venture into your campgrounds. Keep them at a distance by instilling the natural fear of being preyed on.
Nite Guard Solar is a weatherproof device that uses solar energy to operate and can be installed just about anywhere—it’s your perfect camping companion! You don’t need to worry about animals tearing apart your campsite when you have a few of our devices around your campsite.
At night, Nite Guard Solar emits a flashing red light that imitates a predator blinking. If you set one up in every direction of your campsite, animals will stay at a distance.
You can also use Nite Guard so other hikers or campers can find you. If you or another camper/hiker are lost, then it may help you or them be rescued. The blinking red light is visible for up to a mile.
